When Selling A Book…

As a designer, every time I see someone selling some – specifically a book – with a terrible cover, I judge. I don’t judge the book, I judge the writer.

They spent hours upon hours, days upon days, weeks upon weeks, months upon months, or even years slaving away to finish their novel just to fall at the final hurdle and come last in the race.

It’s devastating for me to see someone who’s written a fantastic book but either couldn’t be bothered getting a designer, or just botched one up… It’s soul crushing.

But, there is a straightforward way to fix this: get a designer.

This isn’t just an advertisement of my work, but I’m going to tell you why you need a professional to help you in your dreams. Let me explain.

When buying a book, you are more likely to buy something that fits the genre. Erotica? A sensual cover is best, a semi-naked person is second best – but the worst thing you can do is put two people snogging badly with fire in the background… Erotica is supposed to be sexy and romantic, a snogging fire cover just makes it look like a loveless orgy book.

Another problem so many people seem to do is make their covers way too busy. I’ve done some energetic looking covers in my time, against my advice (the customer is always right? Maybe not), but some books on the market at the moment… Wow! An eBook cover that thoroughly explains the plot including every single detail… You cannot put the entire novel on one page, so why would you try and put it on a cover?

Also, please stop putting a random image on the cover… If you want a picture on it, cut it out correctly or at least just use it as the background… Please, stop just getting a square image and plonking it in the centre of a white background before putting some terrible fonted writing underneath it. Trust me, it won’t work.

Want some famous examples that have made some writers famous:
